Today, the U.S House of Representatives voted to pass the Recognizing the Importance of Critical Minerals in Healthcare Act of 2023, introduced by Representative John Curtis (R-Utah). The bill will amend the Energy Act of 2020 to require the Secretary of the Interior to include the Secretary of Health and Human Services in consultations regarding designations of critical minerals, elements, substances and materials. This will ensure minerals important in the health care sector are considered for designations regarding critical minerals.
“The passage of the Recognizing the Importance of Critical Minerals in Healthcare Act marks a crucial step toward ensuring our healthcare system has the resources it needs. By including the Department of Health and Human Services in decisions about critical minerals, we can make sure essential medical technologies—like MRIs—are never at risk of shortages. I appreciate the bipartisan support of my colleagues and the leadership of Congresswoman DeGette in addressing this gap. Together, we’re working to protect the health and well-being of our communities by strengthening our medical infrastructure.” “Critical minerals play an important role in our health care system, powering essential technologies and devices, but are susceptible to supply chain disruptions. This bill ensures minerals important to this industry are not forgotten when designations are made to the Critical Minerals List, minimizing supply disruptions moving forward. I thank Congressman Curtis for his diligent work to pass this legislation.” – House Natural Resources Chair Bruce Westerman ADDITIONAL READING: Deseret News: Curtis bills address Colorado River salinity, critical minerals
