Title: San Juan County Cancer Screening
Location: 117 Main Street, #221, Monticello, UT 84535
Project Sponsor: San Juan County
Project Amount: $515,952
Purpose: The funding would be used for physical examinations and subsequent cancer screenings as necessary in Monticello, Utah. The Monticello Mill, owned and operated by the U.S. government between 1941 and the early 1960s, was deemed a superfund site in 1989. Prior to this, toxic waste polluted the air and the waterways in the greater-Monticello community. This led to noticeably high rates of cancer diagnoses, some tragically resulting in death. These funds would ensure that depleted resources from prior Congressional authorizations could be boosted and ensure community members can catch these cancers early that are directly caused by the acts of the federal government.
