REP. CURTIS BACKS BILLS TO STRENGTHEN ALLIES AND DETER GLOBAL ADVERSARIES

Today, Representative John Curtis (R-UT) voted in favor of bills supporting our allies and restoring deterrence against China, Russia, and Iran. Following the vote, Curtis made the following statement:

“The United States must take decisive action abroad to prevent the worst-case scenario, allowing our adversaries in Russia, China, and Iran to bring chaos throughout the globe to the detriment of our national security. We don’t live in a bubble, and deterring our enemies is critical to prevent escalation of conflicts that impact our country.

I spent years of my life living in Taiwan and Israel, giving me a firsthand understanding of these region’s unique dynamics. I consider it a badge of honor that I stood up against Russia and China, resulting in the Russian ambassador calling me maniacal and a warrant out for my arrest in Hong Kong. These bills support efforts of critical importance to the future of the United States and the world, all without putting a single American life in harm’s way. Sending aid now can save American lives later.” – Representative John Curtis, Utah’s Third Congressional District

Key aspects of the bills include:

  • Replenishing U.S. weapon stockpiles across various theaters, with 79% of the Ukraine bill’s funding aimed at updating U.S. arsenals with new munitions.
  • Enacting the REPO Act to utilize seized Russian assets in aid of Ukraine, a concept previously introduced by Rep. Curtis.
  • Imposing sanctions on Iranian oil exports.

The comprehensive aid package totals $64.43 billion, representing less than one percent of the projected $6.5 trillion federal expenditure.

Further, the legislation:

  • Supports Israel's defensive capabilities against threats from Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah.
  • Reverses policy concessions to Russia, providing Ukrainians with essential ATACMS for defense.
  • Honors commitments to Taiwan through the Foreign Military Financing Program to expedite weapon deliveries.
  • Allocates funds for submarine construction, critical for deterring China in the Pacific.
  • Enforces the divestiture of TikTok from ByteDance, its Chinese Communist Party-affiliated parent company.
