NO WORK NO PAY ACT, CURTIS REINTRODUCES SHUTDOWN BILL

Washington, D.C., September 26, 2023

Last week, Representative John Curtis reintroduced his bill, the No Work, No Pay Act, prohibiting Members of Congress from being paid during a government shutdown.

"I've introduced the No Work, No Pay Act to ensure that Congress doesn't receive a paycheck during government shutdowns,” said Rep. Curtis. “It’s a common-sense measure, and I appreciate everyone's support for this bill.”

If a lapse in government funding occurs, and like Rep. Curtis has done during previous government shutdowns, he will ask the Clerk of the House to withhold his pay until funding resumes.

This is the third Congress in which Curtis has introduced this legislation and, if government funding lapses October 1st, will be his fourth government shutdown.

WATCH: CONGRESSMAN CURTIS INTRODUCES NO WORK, NO PAY ACT

TRANSCRIPT:

Hey, I'm on my way to the floor and going drop this No Work, No Pay bill. Well, I really never thought would see this day because I was hoping would never do a shutdown again. But here we are at another [potential] government shutdown and believe it or not Congress gets paid in a shutdown. So, I have a bill I've introduced in every shutdown to eliminate that possibility. So Congress doesn't get paid. If we go into a shutdown. It seems so obvious I know, but we need legislation to make it happen. It also makes sure that there is no back pay for Congress so that we go through the shutdown and then go back and pay ourselves back. It's called the No Work, No Pay Act. I'd love everybody's support on it. And, as we move into the upcoming weeks where a shutdown seems so eminent, stay tuned, I'll be releasing a series of quick little, short videos, describing what's happening describing the procedures and giving you more information. No work, No Pay seems pretty obvious, but I'm going to push it forward.
