Curtis Praises Trump’s "Thoughtful and Careful” Remarks; Emphasizes Support for People of Iran

Today, Rep. John Curtis (R-UT), member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement after President Trump addressed the country about the situation in Iran. He praised the President’s measured remarks and has emphasized the need to clarify that the United States supports the prosperity of the Iranian people and opposes the regime. The Congressman has introduced several pieces of legislation to empower Iranian citizens and those of other corrupt autocracies.

“Like many of you, I just heard the President seconds ago and liked what I heard from him. There seemed to be a lot of restraint, there seemed to be a thoughtful and careful response to the situation. In a little over an hour, I’m going to a classified briefing. Many of my colleagues and I have been waiting for this ever since we came back. We’ll hear from Secretary Pompeo and others and it will put me a lot more informed than I am now.”

In an interview with KSL this morning, Rep. Curtis emphasized the need to clarify that the United States supports the prosperity of the Iranian people and opposes the regime.

The Congressman has introduced three bipartisan bills to support the people of Iran and citizens of other corrupt autocracies:

  1. The Justice for Victims of Kleptocracy Act empowers activists and free media by creating a public DOJ website to publicly list the amount of money the leaders of authoritarian regimes have stolen from their people.
  2. The Kleptocrat Exposure Act would provide the Secretary of State the authority to publicly reveal the names of individuals and their immediate family members who are subject to U.S. visa bans as a result of human rights abuses, corruption, and other malign activity—allowing the people of those regimes to know exactly who orchestrating their oppression.
  3. The Countering Russian and Other Overseas Kleptocracy (CROOK) Act creates an anti-corruption fund from FCPA fines—using $0 of taxpayer money—to assist countries that are undergoing historic opportunities for democratic transition, combating corruption, and the establishment of the rule of law.
