Today, Representative John Curtis (R-UT) released the following statement after introducing the Community Policing Act with Reps. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) and Ted Budd (R-NC). The legislation establishes a five-year grant program for local police departments that focuses on increased de-escalation training and community outreach programs to strengthen the relationship between police officers and citizens.

“Recent events clearly show that more can be done to build trust between police officers and the communities they serve. Community outreach programs help build necessary relationships between law enforcement and communities that keep both citizens and officers safe,” said Curtis. “I am proud to be an original supporter of the Community Policing Act, legislation that will help bridge these divides by expanding de-escalation training at the local level.”
